Subway Art?

A little bit ago I decided to give subway art a try.

I bought all the supplies at the end of December.

I mapped out and planned the craft and then did nothing.

Mainly, because I was a little intimidated and have never done anything like this.

I finally told myself that if I didn’t at least TRY I couldn’t TRY anything new or buy anything new.

I don’t know if you know this but last week was CHA and after following all of my favorite crafters and finding out about all the new stuff coming out I could NOT not buy anything new so I dove in.

Boy, am I glad I did. So here is a picture of the final project.

It isn’t perfect there are few smudges due mainly to the fact that I used an artist canvas. Next time I will have to use a board.

I didn’t do any step by step pictures because I had no idea how this was going to turn out.

Now I wish I had.

After my girls saw how it turned out they were way excited to do it again. We have a few ideas floating around that we want to try next.

I will keep you posted.

This weekend we are putting together a valentines box for Al.

She found a pattern for a box she wants to make it is way cute.

Welcome

In October I bought a way cute door welcome.

The center block can be exchanged per season. The blocks sell for about 6.00-8.00 dollars.

I decided to to try making my own and see how it went. Thank goodness for my hubby who was able to do his table saw thing and precut 13 squares for me.

He nor I are brave enough to let me use the table saw.

Maybe one day.

Meanwhile, I reap the benefits of  his know how.

December Welcome.

(Loved IT!)

Then because we have soooo many December birthdays I decided to make a Birthday Welcome.

(My favorite part is the bejeweled sprinkles)

Before I knew it we were welcoming January! I hate the winter and the cold, but if I have to think of a reason to love winter, I would have to say it is the perfect time of year to snuggle.

P2096862
(I believe another name for Frosty kisses is Eskimo kisses. Lately I have felt like an Eskimo it has been so cold)

Then suddenly it was February. Time to celebrate LOVE!

P2096859

Next up good ole St. Patty day. I know it will be green but other than that I’m still thinking.

What do you think?

Finished Clunky Blocks

Finally, a moment to breathe and a moment to catch up. Last time we spoke I believe I was working on this.

P1216831

I completed the project last week and if you excuse the pun I LOVE it!

P2096856

I’m not really good with the step by step tutorials but I can tell you that I played it pretty safe.

P2096847

I chose papers from the same collection.

P2096849

Seemed like a little bit of a no-brainer to use a heart for the “o”.

P2096850
(I don’t know why but this is my favorite block.)

Then I tied each block together by using elements from the others.

P2096851
(For reasons I can’t explain this is my least favorite.)

Each block has a bit of glitter, a bit of jewels, and used pink, dark pink, white, and black.

P2096845

Because of my stellar pre-planning.(:P) I ended up with an extra block. I had a little fun and made a vinyl heart. Total time investment in this block 2 minutes. :)

Chunky Blocks

Currently I am working on a block project. Using a 2×6 by 8′ board.

Which cost a whole 3 bucks. Woo Hoo!

I was able to use Brent’s saw for the very first time and I cut these babies all by myself.

While my husband said continually, “Watch what you’re doing you’re going to cut your hand off.” Then after I said, “I’m not going to cut my hand off!” for the 100th time he left me alone and went in the house where he didn’t have to watch.

Sometimes he is a tad overprotective. The poor guy about has a heart attack when I drive in the snow.

Anyway, now I took a little drive to tangent town let’s get back to the project.

I cut five pieces in random sizes. In retrospect I wish I would have planned the sizes out a little more. There a little closer in size than I would have liked.

Next I went to work priming the blocks.

Did I mention there was about 15 little boys over here at the time who ALL wanted to help. I let two oldest help and sent the rest away.

Note to self craft in hiding! Or accept the fact that little hands like to help.

(Again with the tangent, sorry)

After I was done priming I painted the blocks black with paint from previous project.

P1216831

I quickly discovered I HATED THE PAINT!

It was about this time that the hubby said you need a black flat paint. OH!

WalMart black flat spray paint 97 cents.

Current status of project blocks cut, primed, and painted….

Cost 3.97

More coming soon.

Project One

If you are at all like me and my hubby you like your home.

You have enjoyed a few DIY projects and most of all you just enjoy making your house a home.

Also, if you are like us, your room is on the very bottom of the todo list, where it stays no matter how many new todos are put on the list.

Well this year I have decided that is going to change. I’m starting my own Project 12 where each month I’m going to tweak and update our early newlywed not so newly room.

This month we started with paint I started here if you want to read about it. And this is how it ended up.

The thing about computers is you may really not see the same color I do. Let me give you a few quick facts. This color is called French Rivera and is an Olympic paint. I guess it is a dark teal. The rest of our room is a light gray and together they look awesome. It was just the shot of color that our room needed.

What my hubby doesn’t know is I have an actual color pallet in mind. But I know him and I know if I show him the pallet he is going to freak.

He will probably even try to tell me no.

Then we will go back and forth for months and in the end we will use my pallet. And… He will love it!

See we have been married long enough I’m just cutting out the fight.

But I’m all about sharing so I will give you a peak at the colors I have in mind.

I know you’re wondering how I am going to pull this off but don’t fret I have skills.

Happy Wendensday Y’all

PS
This is February’s before picture. :)

P1236833

It’s January So…

It’s January so that must mean it is time to paint. January is an awesome time of year to paint (insert sarcasm here).

The most obvious reason is because it is so cold you can’t do anything outside. Which means it is so cold outside that you can not open the windows to keep from getting high on paint fumes. It also means that the paint will take twice as long to dry. So why I get the inkling to paint every January is beyond me.

I can tell you that new paint makes me happy. I know, it may have a little to do with the paint fumes but I think it has more to do with a fresh new coat of paint.

Last January I painted my room a cool (and I mean this like, a cool color, not like, “Dude that was so cool!”) gray.

I really like the gray but all year I have felt like it needed something. Yes, some pictures on the wall and some furniture that wasn’t early newly-wed but not so newly anymore would help. But it needed something MORE!

This weekend it started to come together. First of all I just have to tell you that Lowes and I have a relationship they understand my need for paint and they are more than happy to have their paint on sell, frequently.

This week Olympus Premium Low Odor paint was on sell. We haven’t ever tried Olympus paint but it was on sell and what I have in mind for our room may backfire. Also, it is low odor and we can test just how much of my happiness is the new paint or just the paint. I’m going out on a limb here and keeping my fingers crossed as I jump out of the neutral world into the wow that is a color world.

P1176806

Because what I plan on doing is painting this wall,

P1176804

this color.

P1176818

Well here it goes, wish me luck!

PS Low odor smells a little like play doh

Looking Around

The past couple of years have been financially tight. Like most of the country the recession has affected our jobs and our budget. Our main focus has been upkeep. Our room, the downstairs, and the outside of the house all received a fresh coat of paint. Other than that we have tread the financial waters hoping for a turn around in the economy. Thankfully, it looks like that turn around is happening.

Making us feel itchy, we have one very small room unfinished in our basement, and the debate of what to do with the tiny room continues. We also, need to finish the laundry room and then our home will be 100% finished. For those of you leaving in Utah you know what a rarity it is to have a 100% finished home. It will be a good selling point in the years to come. Not that we are planning on selling but it always a good idea to keep resell in mind.

As the debate continues I have started to notice a few more items that are in need of upkeep. One item is the rug under the dining room table. I believe the rug is about 10 years old. It is a large circle braided rug. I have loved this rug. It hides all the stains that it obviously must have after 10 years of kitchen use. Overall it has held up beautifully. Until recently! Now the rug is slowly and surely coming apart.

Now I’m on a rug hunt. It needs to be a large rug. Our table is a traditional, oval, sits six, table. I have a secret desire to have the kitchen from the show, “That’s So Raven.” Basically, the kitchen is a color explosion red, purple, and yellow. We are talking bright and loud. I’m still working on my traditional hubby. So far I have worked in a soft yellow color and a light green.

With the colors I want this rug from Crate and Barrel.

My traditional hubby would prefer this rug.

I like it and marriage is all about compromise. The hunt continues. Who knows maybe I will bring him around to my way of thinking.

If you could paint your kitchen any color you wanted what color would it be?

Trying this Again

Is this working

Testing, testing

Well here I am taking a great big step into the .com world. I have felt all safe and cozy in blogger world. Blogger even made me feel smart. I pretty much knew how to do everything I wanted from the start. Now I am trying to figure out this whole new format. Big smile and lots of hope that I figure all of this out. Quickly.

Cricut Project #1

Here is my first Cricut project.

My very cute niece just celebrated a special day. Her first name begins with an H. I found an initial block at Michaels and decorated it for her.

Hcrick

I used the Tinkerbell Cart for the butterflies and Plantin SchoolBook Cart for the tag.

The paper is by Making Memories. I wanted to use girly colors but I also wanted them to be bright and cheerful. I think it turned out cute.

I discovered a few problems and it turned into a much bigger project then I initially planned for. My first problem was I did not have a font that matched up with the letter.
Lucky me I have a Computer minded hubby. Who loves to play and figure things out. Using a software program that is out on the market he was able to match the fonts up. I haven’t purchased the program yet because there are a couple different ones and I’m not sure which one I want to get.
The two programs are SCAL and Make the Cut.
Have you heard of them? Which one do you prefer?
